Winston Karel Student Award

As a legacy to the Canadian Well Logging Society (CWLS), and in reembrace to a pioneer in Petrophysics, the Winston Karel CWLS Student Award is funded by Lois Decker, wife of Winston Karel.  Winston Karel was an incredibly gifted man who worked as a senior staff geologist, a petrophysical specialist, a senior log analyst, and a well site supervisor in the oil and gas industry. He also served as an instructor of all of these professions.  Winston Karel was a long-time CWLS member and friend to the community who passed away on July 1st, 2015.

  • Best Student Thesis wins $1000
  • Best Student Abstract wins $500

GeoConvention student submissions are considered.  Submissions should critically examine some aspects of well logging, formation evaluation or petrophysics and should be submitted and delivered at GeoConvention.

The winners are invited to an awards presentation at GeoConvention

Student Award Eligibility Criteria: Candidates must be registered full-time at a Canadian university.  A student’s financial need may be considered.
